At Shawley Community Primary Academy, our Geography Curriculum aims to inspire our children to become curious, independent and explorative thinkers. As such, our Geography curriculum is driven through an enquiry based approach where pupils develop the confidence to question, observe, measure, record and present their findings. Each unit of work is rooted in an enquiry question where, through investigations, discussions, fieldwork and map work, children are given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of their chosen unit. As children move throughout the school, they will use and build upon their skill sets and knowledge base by growing their understanding of geographical concepts, terms and vocabulary.
Through our use of Kapow, we will build an awareness within our children of how Geography shapes our lives at multiple scales and over time. We encourage our children to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them. Within our lessons we actively make links to the wider world by discussing the Sustainable Development Goals and the UNCRC Rights.
Our children will investigate a range of places – from their locality, Britain and the wider world – to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. At Shawley Community Primary Academy, we are committed to providing our children with opportunities to investigate their local area, so they can have a deeper understanding of who they are, where they live and what makes our area so unique and special.
Our approach to Geography encompasses different areas of connectivity; broad ideas, subject to subject, pedagogical and concept links ensure that knowledge and skills are learned and then embedded into long term memory and that pupils can build on these progressively to reach agreed end points. There are clear, coherent and sequenced learning objectives and outcomes in place for each year group and these are organised to enable children to build on their knowledge and skills progressively each year.
In order to prepare pupils for their future learning in Geography, our Geography Curriculum introduces them to key substantive concepts including: Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge, Human and Physical Geography and Geographical skills and fieldwork.
We encourage first hand experiences through handling real artefacts and wherever possible arranging school trips to relevant sites of geographical interest in the region or bringing in specialists for in-school workshops.
After completing a learning walk or book/planning scan, a FADE form is filled in with what is going well and what targets to put into place. Feedback is given promptly to all staff and CPD can be put into place if necessary. This is either via an external provider, a staff meeting or via individual or year group/phase meetings. On the next monitoring cycle, subject leaders reflect back on the previous EBI’s to ensure they have been met or evidence that they are working towards meeting these.
